I have only just found this site and wondered if others had the same issue as me in finding the right products. I don’t know if I want to share all my details on here but have issues with getting to the toilet in time as I am in a wheelchair and live on my own. I also don’t want to wear a bulky pad that’s obvious when I go out or have family round. has anyone got any suggestions?
Hi Richard,
Sorry to hear you are struggling with this. Incontinence in men is not as uncommon as people think; it is estimated that over 3.5 million men suffer from some form of incontinence.
Do not worry about your product not being discreet, the market for incontinence products is becoming much more advanced and user-friendly. There are now products available to you that are discreet and allow you to go about daily life without the worry of what other people might think. Men’s all-in-one incontinence products are a great option for you if your incontinence is moderate to heavy. As you mention you are less mobile, these pads secured in place with adhesives strips at the side, making them easy to put on. They are recommended as the best option for those who are immobile or less mobile. All-in-ones are suitable for both faecal and urinary incontinence. iD Expert Slip Maxi Cotton Feel pads are a popular all-in-one product for men, providing you with freedom of movement and comfort. You can alternatively try pull-up pants if you prefer the feel of ordinary, stretchy underwear to an all-in-one.
If you are suffering from light incontinence and your leaks are very small, incontinence pads may be ideal for you. You can buy shield pads that are specially contoured to the male body, providing security and comfort. Attends for Men Level 1-4 are a popular range of pads that are ideal for managing light to moderate incontinence. If you struggle with keeping these in place, you can wear them with Net and Lycra pants.
In addition to finding a discreet product that works for you, it is important to talk to a Doctor to see if there are any underlying reasons for your incontinence. They will also take into account your diet and any medications to make any modifications. Your Doctor will also recommend lifestyle changes and inform you if they feel you require surgery.
In the meantime, it can help to ensure your route to your bathroom at home is clear and as easy to access as possible.
Take care and do not hesitate to seek further advice!
Hi Richard,
I hope you have found a product that is ideal for you. Has your GP suggested any tips that have worked for you? It would be great to know how you are doing with managing this.
Thanks, that’s really helpful. I should go and see my GP again but I already know that my issue is due to my Arthritis which is the cause of my spinal issues.
The whole bathroom thing really affects my quality of life, it also means that I am probably not drinking enough which is bad and I don’t even like looking at running water if I turn on a tap!
I will have a look at the products you suggest and let you know how I get on. In the meantime if anyone reading this has similar issues it would be good to hear how you are getting on.
