Hi all- I’m new to this and would appreciate some advice . I’m diagnosed with bph, and have had an ultrasound scan showing enlarged prostate and retention. I get urge incontinence and leak as soon as I feel the need to go. I have been given a supply of shaped pads with fixing pants, whilst I wait for consultant referral to come through. The pads are fine for small leaks, but soon get heavy, and then leak at the sides onto my clothing. I don’t think the pad is full, but doesn’t seem to contain. How do others deal with this- what’s the best way to keep them secure? Any suggestions gratefully received! Thanks
Hi,
Thank you for your question. Sorry you’re experiencing this. It sounds like the leakage barriers are not properly activated. When opening your pad, try pinching the top and bottom together before stretching length ways.
If this method doesn’t make a difference, it sounds like the pads are too light for you. I’d look at a higher absorbency level of the pads if this is the case.
As a man who had had prostate issues and occasional nocturnal wetting for many years, it might be worth your while using all-in-one “slips” until your medical advice has fully identified the problem. I have used slips for many years now and find them totally suited to my condition. They can be secured around the pelvis with Velcro and never move if you wear one under your briefs. Being able to relax without the nagging feeling of wanting to go or needing to locate toilets is the best way to manage your condition. This website has links to excellent product descriptions and telephone advice if you should need it. Hope this helps – I know how distressing the problem of incontinence can be.
I myself have prostate issues but that’s probably down to my incontinence, or so the urologist is telling me. I personally found that the pads and pant system to be a total failure for the above mentioned reasons. I wear nappy style tena slip active fit, maxi. This gives me total dryness even after a large leak. Most health authorities don’t like giving them out as they are expensive, but go see the continence nurse and explain that you need better protection and they should sort you out.
Hi Alex,
Thanks for your contribution. Yes, all in ones such as TENA Slip Active Fit are very absorbent and popular. Do you have any recommendations for incontinence skin care products that have worked for you?
Yes I do. I use a baby nappy cream at every change. I use asda/Morrison’s own brand nappy cream bought over the counter. Its only around £1.25 a pot and in all honesty, it’s the best I’ve tried. All the others don’t really keep a rash at bay for me except these creams and trust me, I’ve tried them all over the years.I say both stores as they are made by the same company. I can’t stress enough how much this cream enables me to wear my nappies without the worry of a rash or discomfort. 1 other tip I will give is, use a disposable glove to apply between changes. This keeps the cream away from the fixing tape area and will ensure the tapes stick like they should.
