I care for my parents and know my mum has incontinence I believe my father suffers mildly but as you can understand it’s a fairly sensitive subject to approach. I’m a bit overwhelmed by the situation as caring for my parents can be pretty hard but dealing with incontinent makes it more difficult. I’m looking for some advice on the care of them? Caring for someone with incontinence is pretty new to me and I want to do my everything I can to keep them dry and clean and to protect their bed and furniture. Any information would be great thank you! 😊
Hi,
Sorry to hear your parents are struggling with this.
The first step to looking after your parents is to ensure they are in the right protective product. Have you looked into any products for them yet?
You mention your father suffers mildly, do you know how severe your mum’s incontinence is?
If you let me know whether your parents are mobile or immobile, I’m happy to suggest some products for them to try.
As for tips on taking care of them, have you tried any methods so far to help prevent them from having accidents?
Hello,
I’ve been looking into products for my mum as shes more open to discuss this with me but from what I understand sanitary products are different to incontinence. I’ve been looking at pull ups for my mum shes can get around but is limited to an extent. My mums problem is she gets a last minute urge to go to the toilet and then cannot make it on time. do you think a pull up would be suitable? are there any particular brands and places to purchase from you would recommend?
as for my dad hes much more private and i don’t really think this is something he wants to discuss with me. We have noticed that hes changing much more frequently and the beds wet and isn’t from my mum. i was thinking of maybe some pads at first to give him to see if he would use them. what do you think?
Any advice would be great thank you! x
Yes, sanitary products are different to incontinence products, as they are not designed to absorb urine. You need to find a product that is specially designed for incontinence to keep your parents dry. If your mum can get around the house and is fairly independent, pull-ups should be fine. I would recommend the Tena Pants for your mum, as they are a popular option for sudden urges and provide a comfortable body close fit. Would you say your mum’s leaks are light, moderate or heavy? I can recommend a specific level of the pants and where you can find them if you let me know the severity.
For your dad, I think pads would be great to start for managing light incontinence. They are discreet and light so won’t feel like a rapid change for him. Do you think he would be okay with changing these frequently himself?
Great thank you for the advice. My mums willing to try the Tena pants, I’ve spoken to her and she thinks her leaks are moderate so maybe to try something in the middle. What do you think?… it would be great if dad could try a decent pad like you say it isn’t going to feel like too much of a change that way. I’ve been looking at the Tena men range what would you recommend for him?
The Tena Pants Normal are ideal for moderate incontinence, and would be perfect for your mum. You can purchase these online here.
Would you like any advice on choosing sizes?
Yes, for your Dad a light incontinence pad would be the best choice. iD for Men Level 1 would be a perfect pad to start with. You can purchase iD for Men Level 1 here.
