My grandfather is 89 and lives alone suffering with incontinence he’s currently wearing some pads which aren’t working, leaving his bed and chair soaked on a regular basis. He’s not sure about wearing pull up or nappy style product but I’d like to get something for him to give a go as he can’t keep living like he is. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good product to try? Maybe some ideas on how I can protect the mattress as well as the regular bed pads aren’t enough? I hate seeing him like this!
Hi,
You are right in considering a new product option. Your grandfather may be worried about wearing a new product as it is new to him and may seem daunting. However, you can not leave him in pads that are not effective enough, especially if he lives alone.
Does your grandfather have light to moderate incontinence or is it moderate to severe? If his leaks are lighter, you could try a larger, more absorbent pad. Do you know the name of the pads he is in now? If his leaks are heavy and frequent, however, an all in one or pull up product will be ideal.
Is your grandfather bed bound or quite mobile?
All in ones are designed for individuals who spend a lot of time lying down. Pull-ups are ideal for those who are fairly active.
If you can let me know this I will recommend a product for him to try.
I know its so difficult to watch. I hope i can persuade him to try something new. I think hes been wearing some pads shaped for men id have to check to be 100% which ones but id say when he has leakages they are more moderate to heavy and they don’t protect him enough.
Hes not super active but he can get around his home ok. I think a pull up would be ok. Can he still use the toilet as normal if he needs to without having to change himself?
Yes, he can still toilet as normal and does not need to change them after every toilet visit. He does, however, need to change his pants whenever they start to feel full. It might be ideal for you to remind him frequently throughout the day to check whether they need changing until he becomes used to changing them.
If he is fairly independent and can get around the home, he should be okay with changing these. I would give these a go, and if he struggles with putting on and removing these you could try an all in one product.
Let me know how he gets on with these, and if you would like any specific product recommendations.
That’s great. Thank you for the information. I’ve had a chat with him and after some persuading he is willing to give the pull ups a go. Its such a massive relief that hes finally willing to try them. The next step is finding a pull up. I’ve been browsing the internet but i’m not sure which to go with as i can see lots of different options. what would you recommend?
Hi,
