I am a 38 year old female who has had stress urinary incontinence since the birth of my daughter 18 months ago. I have had this confirmed by tests with the NHS and I have tried physiotherapy for my pelvic floor but it’s still a problem and I have to wear tena pads every day. My doctor has offered for me to have a burch colposuspension done or urethral bulking injections. What do people think is the best option for long term improvement?
Hi,
Thank you for your question. Urethral bulking injections are generally less effective than other treatment methods for stress incontinence. You may also need repeated injections. It is however, less invasive than other methods.
Colposuspension, on the other hand, often offers more effective long-term treatment for stress incontinence. However, this option is more invasive as it involves making a cut in your lower tummy (abdomen), lifting up the neck of the bladder.
A colposuspension is better for long term effectiveness. However, it also depends which method you feel most comfortable with. I think the best thing to do would be to ask the Doctor about the potential risks and side effects of each to see which better suits your situation.
Let me know if you need any more guidance.
