I’m a 55-year-old female and struggle with leakages when I cough, sneeze, laugh, lift things and when doing any form of exercise. I’ve herd of bladder training I was hoping to find out more about it and if it could be effective for my situation?? Has anyone tried this??
Hi,
It sounds like you are struggling with stress incontinence. This is the most common form of incontinence and can often be treated easily. Do not worry, it is estimated that 1 in 5 women over the age of 40 suffer from this.
Bladder training is a common treatment method that many people with stress incontinence prefer. It is less invasive than a surgical method. Bladder training is useful in lessening the length of time between bathroom trips. It also increases how much urine your bladder can hold and improves your control.
You should ask your Doctor to provide you with a bladder training programme, do not be embarrassed to talk about this as it can be invaluable! Your Doctor may recommend Kegel Exercises, delayed urination and scheduled bathroom trips. Delayed urination involves putting off urination when you feel an urge. You gradually increase the length of time you can hold the urine. Scheduled bathroom trips allow you to become used to visiting the toilet at acceptable intervals.
It would be interesting to know which other methods of treatment you are trying. Have you been provided with any treatment tips in the past? If you share more about your situation I can recommend some additional tips for you.

Thank you for the information provided. This has been going on for a while but i never thought much of it until i read a magazine article which made me worry a little that this situation could potentially get worse in later life. I’ve only been doing kegel exercises but only for a short period of time. How long would you say it should take until i start noticing a difference?
How have you been finding practising kegel exercises? Do not worry about not having immediate results; it often takes up to 12 weeks to notice a significant change.
Have you tried any other methods?
Hi, thanks for getting back to me! i only started in about mid April so i’m trying to keep positive and hope these will help. so Far kegel exercises are the only things I’ve tried. I was wondering if you would recommend a product for me to use. I haven’t been using anything but often have to change my underwear. Do you know of any good washable products on the market?
Hi, have you seen any improvements due to kegel exercises?
Yes, you can purchase washable pants with a built in pad, however disposable pants and pads are generally much more absorbent. How heavy would you say your leaks are?
