Incontinence Pads for Women after Menopause
For women, there are three steps to menopause, which include perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause. These three, distinct phases of menopause begin in an average woman around age 47. During this process a woman may find that she trades her sanitary towels for incontinence pads for women; because along with mood swings, hot flashes and drying skin, a menopausal woman may very well begin to suffer from urinary incontinence as a result of the thinning of vaginal muscles.
The first stage of menopause, perimenopause, is marked by a decline in hormone levels, and along with this decline comes insomnia, forgetfulness and even the beginning of hot flashes. Tissues in the urinary tract and vagina can begin to dry, which can increase the likelihood of urinary tract infections. For some women hormone replacement therapy helps to alleviate some of these symptoms, but when undergoing hormone replacement therapy, it may be difficult to mark the onset of menopause.
Menopause occurs around age 51; and typically a woman enters menopause at about the same age as her mother did, but smoking can lower the age of menopause by up to three years. Unlike perimenopause, which can last from two to ten years, menopause is a single event in the life of a woman. It marks her last menstrual period, and since a woman never knows which period is her last, menopause is always a retrospective determination. After a full, calendar year with no menstrual cycle, menopause can be declared. Following menopause is the third stage known as postmenopause. This stage consumes the rest of a woman’s life.
With life expectancies ever increasing, there is a very real chance that a woman will develop some sort of stress incontinence as she ages; however, ageing itself is never the cause of incontinence. Diet, exercise, and treatments such as hormone replacement all help women live long, healthy and happy lives; and in the event that stress incontinence does result as a side effect of menopause, then there are incontinence pads for women to help manage the situation as effortlessly as possible.
